Background/History: Here's her wiki page.
Personality:Beatrice is someone hard to forget, and easy to remember. A breathing, living on the edge of reality and fiction contradiction who’s gold colored presence makes it seem like she’s there when she’s not. If her beautiful appearance isn’t enough to leave a mark, her wild actions certainly will, in more ways than you count in a thousand years. Ruler of Mt. Purgatory, Endless Witch, Ruler of Rokkenjima’s nighttime or the true master of the Ushiromiya mansion; no matter what title she goes by, Beatrice’s name instills a sense of dread, fear, and, if you’re smart, respect.
Being renowned in both Heaven and Hell for your cruelty is no easy task, after all.
The self proclaimed true sovereign of Rokkenjima, she plays out the role of the antagonist throughout the Question Arcs. Cruel, fickle, infamous for her savagery and with the power to prove it, she’s quite the frustrating opponent for Battler, seeing as she rarely gives him a chance to breath let alone stand firm. In the end, we’re forced to associate her with blood and guts and magic, like one of those witches who fatten children only to cook them in an oven whilst still alive. Between ruthless slaughtering and utter disregard for the dead, her sadistic tendencies ultimately seal the deal on this: Beatrice’s actions can only be considered that of a witch’s.
After all, isn't that the point of her game? Her supposed goal is submission, would acting like the silly, childish woman she is convince him that she is the real monster she claims to be? For the sake of winning and being accepted, she'll pretend to be cruel. He who lacks a sixth sense cannot fathom the idea of a 'kind' witch, so she must act like someone from a fairy tale, to what he would usually associate witches with. She forces us to think that she wants nothing more than to push Battler onto his knees without moving a finger, to submit his mind, body, and soul to her and magic. This is a torture tailored to him, an intimate form of abuse that is both brutally senseless and incredibly thought out.
Aside from this, Beatrice is quite juvenile in reality. Chortling or throwing tantrums whenever things do not go as she expects. Speaking rudely and playing tricks on unsuspecting people; this side of Beatrice could almost be called her 'real' self, the one who lurks behind the brutal witch. Although we cannot discredit the other either, they are almost like two sides of a constantly flipping coin. If we were to take away the severity of her actions, she would amount to nothing more than a bully who enjoys teasing and playing pranks. She can butt into other people’s business (not without haughty cackles and laughter), or she can enjoy the company of friends with nice, warm tea.
There is also the softer, more feminine side of hers. To be able to have the kindness and love it takes to forgive one who killed her when she was but a baby, and the patience and understanding it requires to wait for someone who might never come. She even promises to leave alone those who respect her. We’ve seen her provide advice and comfort to others who she likes, and she even has friends and mentors! Her relationship with Maria Ushiromiya is but one example of this calmer side to the usually brutal Beatrice, with how she is often given a peaceful death, and how protective and kind she behaves with her. With Maria, Beatrice is simply the beautiful witch of the forest who gives candy and company to a lonely child.
We’re left to think that her cruelty had been sparked by curiosity. That the innate, morbid curiosity all humans share of murder, of pain and sadness and losing something you can never get back, the “what ifs”, had all driven her towards the devilish side of magic. Whether it be breaking an expensive antique or killing a family member with your hands, the adrenaline and despair one feels at these events cannot be described nor duplicated. However, while learning about the Endless magic, it came to her attention that she could play all she liked - recklessly or otherwise - and not have to cry over any broken toys. This is the basis for her careless nature when it comes to other people, for they can easily be repaired. And, she does come to believe that such things are ok since they can be fixed and therefore hold no physical consequences, but this isn’t how she became the ruthless murderer we see today.
Someone who is willing to spend an eternity enduring torture for something so trivial as being “accepted” is definitely hiding something.
Beatrice is more deceitful than any con man you’ll ever meet, which is evidenced by the fact that everything she is and everything she has is nothing but an illusion. One thing that absolutely must not be forgotten when considering Beatrice’s character is that everything (absolutely everything) is an illusion. There is no magic or alchemy, no butterflies nor goats. Beatrice is doomed to fail at this game because, simply, there is no witch to believe in. The closest thing to magic Beatrice holds is the art of trickery and manipulation. She is fearsome in the way that a country could be run by an impostor and no one would notice kind of way, or how you realize that there can be people pulling the strings without you knowing.
But, who is she then?
There is only one thing that should never be doubted when it comes to Beatrice, and that is that every gesture is deliberate, a perfectly planned action, while every word and every murder is filled with heart, her heart. Beatrice lays herself bare in Umineko, her only protection being the illusion of a witch. To her, magic means more than just a way to get away with murder; It’s her sword and shield, and the only way she can convey her feelings.
Now, let’s unravel the illusion of the witch.
Illusions to Illusions: A witch who hides under night’s mantle can only be an illusion.
She, who has never been allowed to step out of Rokkenjima, caged, forgotten, and lonely; is she truly the sadistic sovereign she claims to be? If we look deeper, we see a naive child who is simply waiting for an answer. The truth is that Beatrice is angry and, above all, hurt. And it is all for and because of love.
The reason Beatrice was born is because of the pitiful wish of “Yasu”; also known as Shannon, and later on, Kanon. On a fateful day six years ago, Battler promised something to Shannon, something that impacted her greatly to the point of making her fall in love with him. From then on she nurtured a seed of love, going past the point of no return, until its roots were fettered deep within her heart. For six years she knew nothing of Battler. No call, no letters, nothing. The heartbreak and pain she had felt at being left behind by the man she loved was becoming too much for her, to the point where she was about to break. In her despair, she found a single escape.
That escape was Beatrice.
Yasu had already created Beatrice at this point. However, she's not the same one we see today, nor was she meant to serve this purpose, although she was the basis for Beato. The original Beatrice was Yasu’s own escape, unrelated to Shannon’s situation, and took over Yasu’s place in both the real and in the made up world that functioned as Yasu’s “happy place”: The Golden Land. Nonetheless, she was the only one who knew of Shannon's situation, and was at a loss on what to do for her grieving friend. Shannon refused to stay in the golden land, so what more could she do? Suddenly, she was struck with an idea. What if she could take Shannon's place?
Illusions to Illusions: The girl who could love no longer could only turn into Illusions.
"Please, take my feelings that went unfulfilled… my feelings that I couldn't hold back… and make my wish come true."
And so a beautiful witch of blonde hair and blue eyes was born. Fitted to Battler’s taste, the Beatrice we know today was given the love of a girl who ached with the pain of abandonment, who carried a cross for six years, who had nowhere to turn but to a fleeting wish that, perhaps one day, he’d come to love her as much as she had loved him. This endless, despairing, utterly painful love is the source of all the insanity and the hurt, all the murders and the riddles and the illusions.
This is the motive for the Rokkenjima murders.
She is nothing but a dream that gained it’s own life, and was doomed to eternal suffering in the place of a young girl who was too young to know better. All she did was look for a way to fulfill Shannon's wish, and at the same time, quell her own aching soul. She must get Battler to remember his promise, and once and for all, decide between loving or moving on. Even if he did not love her back, as long as her feelings get receive an answer, Shannon will be truly at peace, and, in turn, Beatrice. It is an innocent wish, fueled by the purest form of love (or delusion at this point). The words of her mentor and predecessor describe Beatrice very well: she is but a naïve child.
Abilities/Powers:Beatrice relies heavily on both belief and trickery. If she is alone with someone who believes, most anything could happen, even a fight between gods. However, this is akin to a lie that no one can disprove simply because no one but someone who believes her was there to witness it, this is how she manages to make the impossible, possible.
Witches are highly susceptible to 'magic-resisting toxin'. That is, the disbelief in magic. If enough people believe, Beatrice is capable of achieving miracle. However, if there are people filled with 'toxin', unbelief, Beatrice's very body is in danger of disappearing. During the games, she lowered disbelief by making small tricks and making it seem like magic, which eventually led people to question themselves, until she was able to appear in front of others.
Another weakness is boredom. Since a witch can do anything, she quickly becomes bored, and her life loses meaning, therefore she ceases to exist. This is the illness that all witches carry.
Now, weaknesses that are Beatrice specific are spiders, and in turn, spider webs and mirrors. The spiders and spiderwebs are because of a legend concerning the Rokkenjima island, which is said to be inhabited by demons who were weak to spiders and their webs. Yasu decided to give this weakness to Beatrice. Things that are spider shaped, such as drawing, or a charm, will weaken or even burn her. Beatrice is also weak to mirrors because, no matter how hard she believes that she is the great witch Beatrice, all that will be reflected is the pitiful face of Yasu, and thus dispelling her magic. Mirrors could be anything that reflects an image, although this does not mean that her reflection in, for example, sunglasses, will weaken her. She has to see the object first.
It is often commented that Beatrice's potential as a witch is enormous and that she holds a deep power that she doesn't recognize herself. If great witches like Bernkastel and Lambdadelta admit that her powers are fearsome, then she really must be!
Endless Magic:
• As the Endless Witch, Beatrice has the ability to control the life and death of anything, including repeating objects and changing their fate completely. For example, a vase that was broken might be repaired by a lesser witch, but only for a limited amount of time since ‘fate’ will eventually break it again through some other event. However, Beatrice’s repairs will be permanent, thus changing its fate of breaking as well.
• She can also create any sort of illusion and has mastered creating and destroying the concept of eternity and infinity itself.
• She has been seen to take huge amounts of damage and survive, such as when she was impaled by several spears by Virgillia only to stand up and heal herself easily.
Summoning:
• Can summon: The Stakes of Purgatory, The Siesta Sisters, her butler Ronove, and multiple goat attendants. She is also able to summon the giants that use shields of Hephaestus for protection, and The “Shoulder Towers” which are extremely tall and fire an incredible amount of spears of light.
Simple Magic:
• She can levitate in the air, teleport, and turn into a swarm of golden butterflies. Make tea out of nowhere, make candy fall from the sky, among other things. Simple, cliche magic which is (usually) used to make people happy.
Truths:
• She is able to utilize the red truth, which states facts that cannot be argued against, but loopholes can be used around it. For example, "Lisa was in the room and didn't see anything.", but Lisa could be blindfolded! This is a trick a witch uses to confuse her opponent and make him submit to her, by making him think that there was no way such a thing could happen if a witch didn't do it. Only witches can use the red truth.
• The blue truth, which is used to theorize against a witch. For example, "Lisa could've been blindfolded, therefore it's possible for someone to do it."
• Once she fully 'understands' a game board, such as her own, she is able to use the golden truth, which is the 100% truth and no loopholes can be found. "Lisa's eyes were open the entire time!"
Alchemy:
• Can create gold and other objects out of thin air. However, creating gold at the moment is unavailable due to the contract she made with Kinzo.
Items/Weapons: Her pipe! Nothing else.
Sample Entry: A meme thread.
Sample Entry Two:If you happened to be passing through the rose garden, you would no doubt notice the particularly bright crimson patch of flowers that contrasted greatly from the regular pastel colored blossoms. They were in full bloom to boot! Their smell overpowered all the other plants in the vicinity, making it nigh impossible to miss. In fact, it seems that few golden butterflies had found their way to it, fluttering about without any particular purpose. However, inside the fantastical rose garden lay an even grander sight.
A woman of golden hair and cerulean hues, her large dress suggesting nothing less than nobility— the golden butterflies fluttering about only increased fairytale-esque scene --- Peacefully drinking tea in the middle of it all. At someone's arrival, she slowly blinks as if coming back to life, before turning her head towards them. One would normally believe her to speak politely, or perhaps even meekly. However, this time—
“You there, don’t you want to join me? You might choke on a fly if you stand there with your mouth open all day!! Kyahahaha!!” She cackles at the thought, as if it would be quite the sight. Or perhaps she's mocking them, you can never tell with this woman. "Although there wouldn't be any flies in a place like this, maybe a butterfly?" As if on cue, one flies near them. She laughs, a bit more contained than the previous chortle. She inclines her head forward, towards the empty chair on the opposite side of the table.
"Come, drink with me. A beautiful garden such as this would go to waste if I was the only one who enjoyed it. Or would you rather ogle at me from the sidelines~? Maybe you prefer flies instead of tea? Kyahaha!!"
